What the courses teach
Each course takes students from the basics to finished show cakes: baking and levelling sponges, building layers in a ring, whipping creams and cooking syrups to temperature, smooth coating, meringues, chocolate décor, fresh flowers and berries, painted finishes and themed cakes like a unicorn cake. The first course runs 34 lessons (about 4 hours); the second, released three months later, adds 24 more (about 2 hours).
How we filmed it
- A wide camera on the chef at the counter, so students see the whole setup and every tool before a step starts.
- A close-up camera on her hands for the techniques that decide the result: piping, smoothing, cutting layers.
- An overhead camera straight above the work table, the angle students copy when they bake along at home.
- One look in every lesson. Each course keeps the same framing, light and color grade from its first lesson to its last, so it feels like one product.
The film above is narrated in Nikita's own words, read by an AI voice made from his, over an instrumental of "Cake for the Camera", the original song we wrote for this project.
From the shoot
This was the chef's first time ever on camera. She needed direction and a little help, so we guided her through every lesson.
Some lessons she read from a teleprompter. Others, she just talked.
We filmed in her own kitchen. It was small, so fitting the lights and three cameras in there took some work.
The overhead camera was the tricky one. We rigged it once, and it stayed locked in place for all three days of filming.
And the best part: they came back three months later for another course. To us, that means the videos paid off.
